Our large family takes competition seriously. Whether its weed whacking, cooking or playing cards, some sort of challenge will most likely ensue. Sometimes it is helpful and other times it is just plain silly! This time it turned out to be about raking leaves which ended up nicely.
The large tree in our front yard seems to lose its leaves slowly and several separate raking days are needed. This time a wind storm meant the majority of leaves made an expansive blanket covering plants and grass overnight.
Mude offered to rake them and did part of the work, no large bags were found and so he said he would complete the task later. The supplies were purchased and he was back to school with no time available. The week wore on and those leaves piled higher making their own little bunches and mounds across the yard.
I could no longer stand looking at the leaves and so I went out and worked for 30 minutes but decided to stop so my back would not act up later. The bending motion has proven to be a bad choice in previous endeavors like this one. Finally I came up with a plan, the kids would each do one bag every day and I would as well. This idea was met with skepticism until Soos said she would do her part right then and there. She raked and I held the bags open as she carried leaves and then neatly tied each into a tidy bundle. Just about that time Heme came out and heard me say how Soos had surely saved the day and had already made great progress. He got that look on his face that means he cannot be outdone and the rest is in pictures for you to judge!
OH my! I can sympathize with them. I have cedar trees on one side and a large maple. On the other side I have 4 cedar trees and a huge maples that are on the neighbors side but when the cedar drops and the maple leaf drops I raked 26 bags of leaves and cedar drops. I then helped the neighbor as they are elderly and raked another 19 bags. I am so done with raking.

I find leaf raking very therapeutic, but after 10 bags it does gets a little tedious!

IT is for sure. I love raking it just lets you think and look at those gorgeous leaves!!

I’m waiting until they’re all down. Then I have to wait until it stops raining… that will be June. 😀

I hate to mention it, but there are six bags there and there are still a few leaves on the ground. (a never ending job Lynn?)

With cooperation much is possible, Lynn 🙂 Great photos. I have two trees here, who also leave their leaves at the ground daily. I collect them by brushing here and feel, that I can start all over every day.

My poor hubby bagged 14 bags of leaves last weekend after the wind storm! I guess we got the same one. He’s been sore all week from it. That’s great your children pitched in like that!

Haha well done, we have a competitive bunch too but we have yet to see its positive side through garden work 😄 Our apple tree sheds slowly over a very long period and every time you think it’s done, there’s another covering awaiting clear-up!

What fun (disguised as work) ! I love the leaves, it means you have mature trees in that yard. We moved into new construction, had to plant everything. But, no bagging here, we can rake them to the curb, a township truck comes by once weekly to vacuum them up. Sweet.

Wow what a task… that is a lot of leaves! This time the challenge paid off with a job well done!
I don’t know if you have mulching blades on your lawn mower or not. But if you do, you can mow over the leaves and they disappear like magic. I thought I would mention this in case you were interested.

It was so beautiful lynne. I never thought about how competitive they are until Heme ran outside, raked so fast and tried to carry all of the leaves! He was laying on the grass scooping leaves up!
