Summer love-2
Pullman, Wa. 1982
A shaded silhouette just outside the apartment kept its pace and could be seen through smoke laden curtains. Finally silence was broken with a knock at the door. I had been watching the thin figure as it made its way back and forth several times and now there he stood, the man from the previous day.
Sweaty hands left an imprint on the vinyl couch and loose hair flitted back and forth, masking a full view of the kitchen and entrance to the apartment. I fidgeted with a loose piece of material and tapped my fingers nervously, giving my sister the look that meant I was thoroughly annoyed. A repeat of the initial conversation was now whispered and gained volume with each syllable and expletive. My position had been clearly stated and left nothing more to be discussed.
He was handsome with olive skin and black curly hair, dark brown eyes and a black moustache made him look mature and self-assured. His thick accent and rudimentary language skills made hand gestures necessary but it was clear he was asking me out for a drink. He had borrowed a friends’ car and was waiting, it would be quick and harmless. It seemed ridiculous to continue protesting and it would make my sister and her boyfriend happy. One simple night out and life would then return to normal.
He drove to a nearby town where we sat for hours in the local hotel lounge. A polite and respectful exchange slowly drifted into intimate glances and eventually a tender press of his lips onto mine. He had a different way about him, doors opened, gentle words were spoken and an overall sense of a grounded person was presented. A reminder still tugged at my brain cautioning me to be guarded but I would not be deterred from following my heart.
I wish what followed could have been as beautiful as the start. Sometimes, love makes us do silly things, which seem to be the best at that point of time. Anyhow, we learn and we let go, we heal, find happiness elsewhere. That’s what life is all about; to endure.
Love always,
Ayya 🌸

I’ve often bent my will to please others. Often forgotten to put myself first. Often felt the pressure to make “them” happy. I’m working on it. Thanks, Lynz. This reads honest to me!

Interesting that you sat for hours in a local hotel lounge. I am reminded of many charmers I met from the Middle East who were short of cash but not short on charm.

There is no way you could have known what lurked beneath the suave and romantic exterior as he set the trap. I love Ayya’s advice: “we learn and we let go, we heal, find happiness elsewhere.” You are doing all of those, Lynn.

Even if we had all been there saying “No Lynn, don’t do it.” I doubt it would have made any difference. We do not have much common sense when we are in love!

Oh Lynn you have written so well about the beginning of your relationship. I feel like I am there in the kitchen witb your Grandma and Grandpa and I feel like I was in the house with you when you met him and I want to say RUN! But love can be so intriguing, especially when young. Thanks for sharing! ❤

Ahhhh. The beginning doesn’t always give us insight to what follows, does it?

It really doesn’t!

Lynz, We never know how things will end up in a relationship. Sometimes we just have to take a chance and if things ultimately do not go well we learn from our mistakes and move forward and remain positive. Your life will be even better as you continue to move forward. Gary

Wow, I can’t wait for the rest of the story. Somewhere along the line, he changed from the charmer to the monster.

Oh my the things our hearts do to us. I learnt in later years that the oh so smooth ones are the ones that change and make you feel like your the monster not them. How could it be them it must be you. They are the charmers after all snaking their way into your heart your soul until you are so far in you can’t escape.
